Hematology is the study of blood, the blood-forming organs, and blood diseases that affect the production of blood and its components. Hematology is a subspecialty of internal medicine that is separate from but does overlap with medical oncology. At HOA, we treat patients with a wide variety of blood disorders including hemoglobinopathies (congenital abnormalities of the hemoglobin molecule or rate of synthesis), anemias (lack of red blood cells or hemoglobin), increases and decreases in cell counts, hematological malignancies (such as lymphomas and leukemias), coagulopathies (disorders of bleeding and coagulation), and others. Our treatment plans may include nutritional counseling, various pharmacological therapies, anticoagulation therapy, transfusions, chemotherapy, radiation, and bone marrow transplants.
